It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… an English class? Inspired by one of this summer’s biggest box office hits, join us for a deep dive into the man of steel himself. This course explores over 85 years of Superman’s history, beginning with his origin as the first ever superhero in 1939 and continuing with various comics and adaptations that show the evolution of his character up until the modern day. Our goal is to answer the question: What does Superman stand for? Is he the champion of the oppressed, a representative of “truth, justice, and the American way,” a staunch defender of neoliberalism, a symbol of hope, or something else entirely?
