Rapid shifts in the media landscape carve out exciting new frontiers for language and narrative, creating innovative storytelling mediums for writers and audiences to (literally) play with. For scholars, this necessitates both an updated toolkit of analytical skills, as well as a repositioning of familiar methods from critical literature studies. We will examine video games and tabletop roleplaying games (such as The Stanley Parable, Dungeons & Dragons, and many more) first-hand to discover how interactivity changes the author-audience power dynamic, as well as how the use of second person narration alters the player experience. We will also discuss how narrative writing for games differs from traditional storytelling, and how level design presents unique challenges and opportunities. NO PRIOR GAMING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!
