This course examines the evolution of the phenomenon of terrorism through both academic works and cinematic representations. Terrorism has (re)emerged as a lead feature of contemporary international relations, and the course engages with key questions such as the definition of terrorism, the historical development of the concept, perspectives on its causes, the structure and organization of terrorist groups, the relationship to debates on the changing nature of warfare, and the consequences of terrorist violence. By blending historical and comparative perspectives with a practical outlook on international policies, the course highlights how different forms of terrorism emerge from specific political and societal contexts, and how they provoke varying domestic, regional, and international responses. Drawing equally on scholarly works and films, the course aims to enhance students' critical ability to understand and analyze terrorism, the challenges it poses, and its implications for policy.
