This course situates the history of Ukraine from ancient times to the present within the context of international relations. It shows Ukraine to be both an integral part of European civilization, its frontier and gate, and yet also--as a frontier--as a site of interaction between different cultures, civilization, and political systems. Against this background, this course examines the political and cultural development of Ukraine, traditions of Ukrainian statehood, and the origins of the Ukrainian nation. It discusses the characteristic features of the national and cultural identity of Ukrainians and their contribution to the development and promotion of European democratic values. Students will also improve their skills in analyzing sources, critical thinking, and communication.
