Over the last decade, social media has served as a vehicle for social justice movements, raising awareness of police violence against the Black community (#BlackLivesMatter), abortion rights (#ShoutYourAbortion), gun violence in schools (#NeverAgain), and more. Though social media-based movements have been labeled with the term ‘slacktivism’ (think of posting a black square on Instagram during #BlackLivesMatter), digital communities born from these hashtags have connected women around the world, supporting the transnational feminist agenda. In this course, students will study hashtags such as #SlutWalk, #MeToo, #NiUnaMenos, and more, and how they have been translated, localized, and spread to other countries, bringing women together on Facebook, X, TikTok, and Reddit, among other platforms. This course examines how digital feminist movements travel across borders through hashtags, exploring their translations, adaptations, and global impact on transnational solidarity.
