The course “Colonialism, Gender and Sexuality” will introduce students to the key aspects of
gender, queer and feminist theory, and examine the relationship between colonialism,
patriarchy, heteronormativity, and capitalism in world history. We will move chronologically from
early forms of colonialism to later ones, and deal with various forms of colonialism crucial to the
establishment of European hegemony from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Subjects
covered include: the interaction of colonialism, homosexuality, legacy of anti-sodomy law,
patriarchy, capitalism, care work, violence, race and imperialism. Focusing on different
geographies, the reading material for this course consists of articles and monographs. By
examining weekly assigned sources, students will learn how to identify, evaluate, and critically
analyze evidence to make historical arguments.
