This seminar will explore contemporary topics in music education through lectures, group discussion, presentations, and analysis of music education and general education literature. Students will be able to draw connections between their experiences and current issues in music education. Students will analyze contemporary social justice issues and consider how they influence the process of teaching and learning in classrooms, communities, and homes. Participants will carefully critique how music education practices can perpetuate cycles of injustice, often discouraging students from active engagement in musical activities. Through conscientious consideration of social challenges facing students they currently teach or will in the future, members of the class will develop individual and collaborative lessons and projects that can be used in the music classroom to directly confront social justice issues.
