Catalog Course Description
This course will introduce the paraprofessional to family systems theory and to basic techniques of family therapy. Areas to be considered will include a systems perspective of dysfunction, conducting the initial interview, formulating a plan for change and choosing specific techniques necessary to implement change. Students will work with simulated families, sculpting and genograms. Special attention will be given to working with the families of alcoholics and other types of drug addiction.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of family systems theories and concepts of structural, psychoanalytic, experiential, transactional, behavioral, strategic, and Bowenian family models.
2. Identify the theoretical issues related to family constellations, substance abuse, and processes of recovery.
3. Describe the meaning and function of genograms, sculpting, and role-playing in therapy.
4. Provide an assessment and diagnosis of a chemically dependent client.
5. Develop a treatment plan, taking into consideration the patient's goals and personal issues of diversity.
6. Demonstrate the ability to establish a therapeutic relationship with clients and patients.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of when to make a referral to another individual or agency.
8. Identify and apply ethical principles and multicultural sensitivity in counseling situations.
9. Identify characteristics and behaviors of effective family counselors.
10. Critically analyze and evaluate arguments in counseling psychology for validity, theoretical assumptions, and practical value.
11. Correctly use the American Psychological Association (APA) format for citations and references,
