Catalog Course Description

Students are introduced to the foundational principles of U.S. federal income tax procedures, focusing on tax law as it pertains to individual taxation. Students learn to analyze and apply tax regulations in the preparation of individual tax returns. Core topics include exemptions, deductions, credits, gains and losses, and property transactions. By the end of the course, students will be able to assess individual tax obligations, interpret relevant tax laws, and accurately complete tax filings, preparing them for practical applications in entry-level tax roles. Prerequisite(s): BUS 1402 Fundamentals of Accounting or BUS 1416 Financial Accounting.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Identify the correct filing status, tax forms, and schedules required for individual income tax filings.
2. Analyze and compute a taxpayer’s gross income, applicable exclusions, deductions, exemptions, credits, and taxes.
3. Prepare both simple and complex individual income tax returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal tax regulations.
