Catalog Course Description
In this course, students learn how to calculate, measure, and manage the energy consumption of buildings. Students learn to navigate the growing list of energy efficiency strategies and technologies. Topics include energy auditing, accounting, monitoring, targeting, and reporting; energy management opportunities; and project and financial management.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Compare and contrast the energy usage and efficiencies of mechanical systems (e.g., heating, cooling), windows and appliances using specific metrics such as energy consumption rates or efficiency ratings.2. Identify and describe the key thermal envelope characteristics of a given building and calculate heat loss through its walls using provided material properties and temperature data, showing all calculations.
3. Calculate the life-cycle costs and payback periods for energy management improvements.
