EDU 540 explores sheltered English instruction, translanguaging, and other strategies and methods aimed at making content area instruction more comprehensible for English Language Learners (ELLs). Course participants will learn how to modify and create content area instructional materials and how to plan high quality, effective instruction for ELLs. The goal is for participants to become reflective practitioners by designing instruction to make content comprehensible for ELLs. This course is designed to integrate language and content learning, and ultimately to translate language instruction into meaningful learning. Emphasis will be placed on New York State Education Department (NYSED) policy and standards. There is an early field experience component to this course, only for Option 2 (non-previously certified) students, which involves tutoring at least one ELL.This is the second of three early field experiences prior to student teaching for teacher candidates in the TESOL M.S.Ed. program.
