This course offers a comprehensive survey of visual culture, emphasizing the history of architecture, painting, and sculpture from the Neo-Classical period to the Contemporary era. While exploring the global scope of art history, particular attention is given to the artistic traditions and innovations of cultures from the Middle East, Japan, and China alongside other world regions.
The course examines how the ideas of the Enlightenment influenced the production and exchange of visual culture, fostering interconnected developments in artistic expression. It integrates the Western tradition with the artistic practices of Asia (including Japan and China), the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries.
A key focus is on Global Modernisms, highlighting how non-Western cultures responded to and redefined modernist movements. The course concludes with a study of the pluralistic arts of the 20th and 21st centuries, emphasizing the dynamic and reciprocal exchanges between global art traditions.
By the end of the course, students will gain a deeper understanding of the diverse cultural contributions to the global visual landscape and their enduring impact on contemporary art.
