This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the history and principles of harm reduction in the context of public health. The course will explore the shift from a criminal justice approach to a public health approach in relation to substance use and its impact on policy and practice. Students will learn about the various drug classifications and the harm reduction strategies and interventions that can be applied to each of them. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to a range of case studies and practical examples of harm reduction in a variety of settings and among vulnerable populations. They will be encouraged to think critically about substance use as well as the ethical and social justice implications of implementing harm reduction policies and interventions.
