This course examines the influence of technology on the communication process. The course tracks the evolution of computer-mediated communication (CMC) theory and introduces theoretical perspectives and methodologies used to examine how mediated environments influence communication at the individual, interpersonal and mass media levels. Topics include information processing, virtual communities, diffusion of innovation, social media, and virtual reality. Students will critically evaluate current CMC research and theories and develop a research proposal.
