This course explores key areas of public health law, including legal interventions that apply at multiple levels and impact health behaviors, socioeconomic factors, physical environment, access to health care, and other health determinants. Among the topics covered are the legal foundations for public health practice; public health law powers, duties, and limitations; public health governance; legal approaches to preventing and controlling infectious and food-borne diseases; laws governing public health emergency preparedness and response; legal approaches to preventing and controlling chronic conditions, injuries, and violence; public health ethics; laws affecting privacy, security and confidentiality of personal health information; the role of tort litigation in protecting public health; environmental justice and laws affecting environmental health; and global health law and the concept of a universal right to health. Prerequisite: Graduate standing.
