Global supply chain management is a critical element of all business operations, including drug discovery, sourcing, production, and distribution. This course provides insights into the role of supply chain management in linking the various business functions required for production and exchange of goods and services. The course focuses on managing the cross-border flows of materials, products, information and cash via the processes, technologies, and facilities that link primary suppliers through to end customers. Attention is given to such managerial concepts as demand and technological forecasting, production planning, materials planning, purchasing, production, transportation, inventory management, warehousing, packaging, materials handling and customer service. Recognition is also given to important interrelationships between supply chain management, marketing, and financial management. Interdisciplinary managerial concepts are presented to show how integration of the supply chain processes offers great potential for improving corporate profitability and return on investment. Students will investigate the diverse aspects of supply chain design and operation including a life science product's suitability for manufacturing.
