A SOC 490 is a 3-credit course that offers internships in "applied sociology" in a variety of settings. The course involves a Community Placement of 8-10 hours per week at an agency in the greater Albany area, for a total of at least 100 hours, and an Academic Component of 1 hour a week in the classroom setting with the Internship Director and the other students enrolled in the course. The academic component will include the following: (a) Readings and Discussion: students will relate sociological readings to their placement experiences, (b) Oral Discourse: students will present about their experiences to others in the seminar. And (c) Written Component: students will produce several written essays about various aspects of their internship experience. The course is specifically designed for Sociology majors in their junior and senior years. It is designed to have students apply what they have learned in the core courses of the major into real world settings and to consider possible careers after graduation. Prerequisite(s): the course is open to junior and senior sociology majors who have completed the required core courses in Sociology (A SOC 115, 220 or 310, 221, and 235 or 335) and have at least a GPA of 2.5; Permission of instructor. The Internship Director can allow those with less than a junior standing a place in the course on a case by case basis. Students must apply to be admitted to the course, and if accepted, they work with the Internship Director to find a community placement. Applications are accepted in the semester before the course is offered so that students have adequate time to find an internship placement. S/U graded.
