This course focuses on the intricacies of healthcare data, information, and knowledge, including the importance of Health Information Exchanges (HIEs), data interoperability standards, data quality, and emerging healthcare delivery models. Students learn about electronic health records (EHRs), health information exchange (HIE), and other essential IT components in health informatics, emphasizing health information systems design, implementation, and management. The topics discussed include interoperability in health informatics and health data standards, for example: Health Level Seven International (HL7) and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM). The course emphasizes the importance of maintaining data integrity, reliability, and security in the healthcare sector while exploring relevant regulatory frameworks such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In this regard, students will gain critical thinking skills to address complex data integrity challenges in the intricate healthcare data landscape and information management within healthcare systems. Prerequisite(s): C INF 202 and C INF 241.
