This course explores the history of American sport from various perspectives. It examines political, economic, social, and cultural questions related to equity, citizenship, ethics, culture, identity, and commercialization. The course focuses on the tensions between amateurism and professionalism, the relationship between American sport and notions of nationalism, the intersection of sport and race, class, gender, and sexuality, and debates concerning the parameters of fair play and competition. Through this course, students will develop critical thinking and historical methodologies by analyzing an aspect of American life that is too often overlooked in academic discourse.
