"Ethnicity and the City" is an undergraduate seminar that introduces students to the theoretical and methodological basics of ethnicity and urban anthropology. It highlights the connections between space, groups, identity, class, art, food, and culture, with a special focus on New York City. It starts with a brief introduction to anthropology before exploring urban and ethnic studies within the field. Urban space is not just a physicality that is free from social, political, cultural, and economic influences. Rather, it offers distinct ways of life, where ethnicity and race are reshaped, contested, and negotiated within urban spaces. Studying the cultural and social aspects of ethnicity and race will help students analyze broader issues related to culture, class, inequality, and urbanization.
