Why do people fight? Is violence a part of nature? How can we reduce violent conflict in the world today? The Anthropology of Martial Arts and Conflict will help students answer these questions and more. This course is a four field examination of various types of interpersonal physical conflict and their relationship to culture. The course would have a global geographic scope, and it would also include examination of conflicts throughout time based on the archaeological and paleoanthropological record. In general, the course would focus on five main issues relating to interpersonal conflict, specifically: Types of Conflict, Causes, Practices, Effects, and Conflict Resolution and Prevention.
