Throughout history, the image of the Witch has represented ambivalent attitudes, embodying both fear and fascination. The depictions of witches in media have been used to both control women, and as a reappropriated symbol for diverse feminist movements. This summer course explores the literary and cinematic representations of witches as symbols of femininity, resistance, and transgression. Drawing on feminist and postcolonial theory, we will trace the evolution of the witch’s image from classical antiquity to contemporary media, focusing on how gender, race, and power shape her portrayal. We will examine foundational texts such as The Odyssey and the Malleus Maleficarum alongside modern works like Maryse Condé’s I, Tituba: Black Witch of Salem (1986), and cinematic reinterpretations including Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), The Witch (2015) and The Love Witch (2016). Through comparative readings and film analysis, students will interrogate how the archetype of the witch continues to evolve, from an emblem of patriarchal control to a symbol of liberation, identity, and self-definition.
