This hands-on digital and data skills course explores histories of the intersections between queer lives and digital technologies. Queer history cannot be fully understood without an understanding of the technologies that attend it. Specifically digital technologies have historically played, and continue to play, a vital role in the development of queer identities, communities, and politics. In turn, queer people play a vital role in the development of various digital tech. As a queer history course, we will explore how the ever-evolving nature of social identities surrounding gender and sexuality poses illuminating challenges to the study of LGBTQ2IA+ histories. Mindful of this, we will also seek to understand why gender and sexual identities can only be understood in their intersection with other social identities such as race, class, and disability. This course places a special focus on information technologies and archives as we explore the roles that both digital and print technologies play in keeping alive the histories of marginalized communities and in creating queer futures. Students will learn introductory data analysis using spreadsheets (e.g. Excel) as well as other skills useful for archiving, organizing, and knowledge sharing. Beginners and experienced students welcome; no prior queer studies nor digital/data skills are needed to take this course.
