Long before ChatGPT was even conceived, artificial intelligence has been a looming figure in science fiction. This course will focus on how A.I. was imagined in the late 20th century – through films, like Terminator (1984) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), as well as novels, such as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. We will examine artificial intelligence as a form of monstrosity, and its role in bridging horror with speculative fiction. This class aims to ask the question of how we define humanity in a world where artificial “life” exists.
