In this course, we will watch romcoms and interrogate how love is experienced and portrayed in our current society. Modern attraction and intimacy have inevitably taken on new forms in this era, which is dominated by the increasing alienation of the individual and dwindling community networks. This course aims to disentangle how our romantic lives are shaped by, and how they often rebel against, the forces of neoliberal capitalism. Through films like Pretty Woman (1990), Her (2013), Parasite (2019), and The Materialists (2025), we will study how the popular form of the romcom responds to the modern conditions of dating and romance.
