Stories are a part of the evolutionary process of the human mind as well as a record keeper of civilizations. This course will examine how stories in movies, especially for children and young adults, create narratives that speak to the audience, and become a part of their belief system. Maleficent (2014) and Into the Woods (2014), among other movies, which retell age old stories with fresh perspectives, will ground our discussion. We will critique the narrative-building and the viewership models for both movies and social media apps (X, YouTube, TikTok) and how they address ongoing questions of identity and representation across race, class, and gender.
