This course explores the modern global world between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries, engaging dynamic case studies and their influence on the emergence of the global order. Each week will concentrate on thematic concerns through an exploration of primary and secondary literature, to provide a basis for generating general and critical interpretations of the modern world globally defined. Beyond understanding broader patterns of interaction, this course will consider the role of colonialism, ideology, science and technology, warfare, and the environment in contextualizing patterns of human exchange and interaction and their role in global transformations. Students will be expected to develop critical thinking and analytical skills designed to enhance an understanding and engagement of contemporary global concerns.
