This course examines the global decolonization process comparatively across the imperial world. As colonies transitioned to independent states, the decolonization process fundamentally reshaped the 20th and 21st centuries. This process was fraught with tension, particularly due to Cold War influence and the lasting legacies of colonial rule. This course will explore decolonization through distinct regional case studies across Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, including key examinations of India, Algeria, and Kenya. Each week will be dedicated to a major region, allowing us to analyze the various forms of imperial administration, anti-colonial resistance strategies, and the challenges of nation-building projects. By treating decolonization not as a single global event but as a series of interconnected, yet locally specific struggles, this course will consider why decolonization took such divergent paths across the world and how the resulting “New Global Order” continues to grapple with the legacies of empire. Through the examination of primary and secondary sources, this course will engage with themes of nationalism, imperialism, violence, and Cold War tensions. Students will gain a nuanced understanding of how decolonization impacted the global world and its legacy today.
