This course will explore the development of machine-powered transportation worldwide throughout modern history, from early steam railways to modern highways and airlines. Transport history is often messy - institutions and individuals made decisions mired in scams, scandals, crises, and imperialism. Yet, these technologies not only revolutionized travel but also core concepts of statehood, management, and perceptions of space and time. From the railroad war of the Southern Tier to the implications of the Jet for Soviet spies, this course will examine major developments in transportation technology from the local to the global. Special attention will also be paid to the impact of transport systems on history, as institutions designed rules, set boundaries, wielded power, and created privilege in an effort to maintain their emerging transit networks. By the end of the course, students will be given tools to think critically about the ways technology impacts (and is impacted by) the societies it inhabits. Instruction is designed to be interdisciplinary and accessible for both Humanities and STEM majors.
