The full title of this course is “Food, Power, and People in Latin America and the Caribbean.” It had to be shortened to fit length requirements in BU Brain and Registrar’s Office. This course examines the historical and contemporary roots of imperial agriculture from sugar to bananas, colonialism to neocolonialism. Our focus is agriculture and its influences on diet and culture. In each historical part of this four-part course, we engage in the relationships between power and agriculture as it relates to food in terms of political-economy, sustenance, and culture. Foci: Caribbean and King Sugar, conquest, imperialism, colonialism (Part I) Latino farm workers and American corporations: neoliberalism, NAFTA, wheat, bananas (Part II) Cultural Conjuncture: global agriculture to family table (Part III)
