This course offers an interdisciplinary exploration of Middle Eastern cinema, in an examination of cultural productions that distinguish it from Hollywood cinema. We will undertake an in-depth examination of the region's culture, history, traditions, and social practices through a variety of movies. Students will watch select movies from the Arab world and will supplement this with movies produced in Hollywood that depict Arab culture. Through the filmic images and readings, students will learn about the history of cultural, political, and religious diversity within the dynamically changing societies of the Arab world. Guided discussions and reflective assignments will help students to develop cultural literacy, critical viewing skills, and a deeper appreciation of the region's diversity and complexity, as well as how the region is depicted from the outside. This course is taught in English and all movies have English subtitles.
