The course provides an overview of the fundamental concepts and debates in moral philosophy. Some of the questions we’ll engage with include: what makes an action right or wrong? What role do character, the act itself, consequences and sentiments play in this? What does it mean to be morally responsible? Is it possible to be morally responsible in the absence of a concept of self? What roles does faith play in ethical reasoning? What are the critiques of morality as a whole? Apart from these theoretical concerns, we’ll also engage with some practical issues. We’ll ask if and in what circumstances is abortion morally permissible? What are the arguments for and against euthanasia? Is killing animals morally wrong? We’ll look at both western philosophers like Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, David Hume, J.S. Mill, Peter Singer, Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche and Asian traditions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism.
