What do we owe future persons? One way of attempting to answer that question is to consider what we owe future children, on an individual or social scale. Various positions attempt to address what we owe our future children, from a future free of domination, to the best possible lives. This course will survey positions in procreative justice, examining quality of life views, both those requiring maximization and those requiring that one meet a minimum threshold, as well as positions that do not address quality of life, and rather seek independence for future children. After surveying these views, we will examine their implications as well as challenges to accounts of procreative ethics, including the non-identity problem and the repugnant conclusion. Finally, we will address the social effects of procreative policy (ex., life post one-child policy in China,) and the course will culminate with students articulating an instance of procreative policy, with consideration given to the topics addressed above.
