How can science fiction be a helpful way of understanding political science concepts? This course uses speculative and fictional worlds such as the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Dune to make the big questions of world politics concrete. The course aims to read these narratives as case studies of how power is built, alliances form, wars begin and end, and identities take shape. By translating stories into arguments and weighing them against core IR debates, students will learn to reason clearly about cooperation, conflict, legitimacy, and change.
