Over the years, through thorough research and emotionally charged activism, environmental justice scholars and activists have effectively connected issues of social justice, equity, and rights to people's quality of life. For environmental justice scholars and activists, environmental issues are fundamentally social issues; the two are closely linked. This is because victims of toxins, people lacking sufficient food and shelter, those who are incarcerated, and individuals intentionally poisoned are often people of color, low-income, or working-class individuals. This course examines the various ways in which environmental justice and racism are embedded in society, endure over time, and impact people's lives.
