Across the globe, people have organized to challenge inequality, injustice, and domination–imagining new ways of living, being, and relating. This course explores how social movements since the end of the Cold War have transformed not only politics but also everyday life through horizontal organizing, autonomous spaces, and prefigurative practices–forms of action that seek to practice the future in the present. Drawing on social movements’ theory, we will analyze key movements of the 20th and 21st centuries–from anti-colonial and feminist mobilizations to ecological and community-based struggles to understand how change is imagined, enacted, and sustained.
