First half of a comprehension-based foundation course. Writing and speaking skills emerge through practice in class and out; cultural awareness is developed through reading; listening comprehension is developed through in-class participation and a variety of multimedia materials. First part of elementary college-level Spanish language course. FORMAT: Meets five times per week. Course grade based on oral and written examinations, a journal, a writing portfolio, a group presentation and in-class participation. PREREQUISITE: FOR STUDENTS WITH NO PRIOR SPANISH STUDY OR MAXIMUM OF ONE YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL SPANISH. NOT OPEN TO HERITAGE/NATIVE SPEAKERS OR THOSE WITH PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE LANGUAGE.
