Take your class online with SUNY

You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students

This course is an asynchronous introduction to theatre, with special attention given to the current efforts in theatre to better represent people and stories from historically excluded populations. In this course, you will learn about the work of playwrights, directors, actors, and designers, as well as about theatre’s unique qualities, complex history, and varied forms. You will engage in traditional academic activities (readings, video lectures, quizzes, exams, etc) but you will also produce short, low-stakes creative projects (casting famous actors in a play we’re reading, selecting costumes and set pieces for imaginary productions, etc). No prior experience in theatre is necessary – all are welcome! Additionally, for the Summer Session I version of this course, you will be required to attend ONE LIVE MEETING ON ZOOM and ONE LIVE PERFORMANCE of a play or musical in your local area. The one required meeting on zoom will be a “Meet and Speak Session” on Tues 6/2 at 8pm EST, after the first few days of introductory course work. At that event, you will meet your classmates, give a short introduction speech about yourself, and have a chance to ask questions. For the one live performance, you will be required to find, purchase tickets for, and attend a LIVE PERFORMANCE of a play or musical in whatever area you are in at the time you are taking the course. (You will be responsible for exploring local offerings, but resources will be provided to assist you in finding a show in your area and budget and/or you can meet with your professor to discuss options).
