This course connects the field of Game Studies with that of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. As one of the most popular forms of entertainment, video games generate virtual communities and inform the worldview of the players. Analyzing popular online/digital video games, we will explore how they reproduce or subvert patriarchy, misogyny, sexism, and other gender norms. We will play games and watch relevant video-clips to observe representation and performance of masculinity, femininity, womanhood, queerness, and sexuality in connection with race and class. We will also reflect how gender differences translate into relationships and power-dynamics between the characters in the games as well as between the gamer and the characters. Finally, we will study how game-narratives gender and racialize the category of enemy, dehumanize it, and normalize violence against it.
