This course will look at the visual and literary cultures of Witchcraft, Healing and Magic and how these have informed contemporary gender notions. What is common to all these three categories is that they have mythological origins which function in the shaping of both the feminine and masculine stereotypes. In this course, we will look at Witch folklore and the elements of Magic and Healing as rebellious or anti-patriarchal cultures. Focusing on Early Modern Europe, an intense period for trials and witch hunts, we will look at the role of religion and political figures in villainizing these women based on suspicion. A broader aim throughout this course will be to look at how patriarchal cultures alienate women and what does belonging mean? In terms of literary materials, we will begin by looking at unconventional female figures such as Medea (Greek mythology), The Wife Of Bath, Thessalian Witches etc., along with critical readings on the themes of Gender/Performance, Essentialisation of the Indigenous and more.
