A survey of contemporary Russian and post-Soviet cinema in historical, cultural, and political context. Students learn methods of reading and analyzing film content and style. In addition to major works of Russian film, the course explores cinema from an evolving selection of post-Soviet contexts, including Ukraine, Georgia, the Baltic States, and Central Asia. Topics include cinematic techniques, major events in Russian and post-Soviet history, and discussions of diverse cultural and social issues across the region. All films have English subtitles.
