Verse novels are a favorite for many middle/high school teachers - but what is this hybrid form and how might we read, analyze, and teach it? Designed with future educators in mind, but open to all, this course explores the contemporary 'verse novel': character-driven narratives that use lineation and other poetic techniques to engage readers. You'll consider the different genre expectations of "verse" and "novel," discover a wide range of 21st century examples of the form, and practice analyzing examples of this wonderful genre while also thinking about how to apply what you're learning, whether through critical analysis, teaching strategies, creative writing, or another kind of applied learning.
