This course will examine how individuals, families, communities, institutions, media systems and cultural narratives frame and react to trauma exposure. We will use this social-ecological lens to consider reactions that promote recovery, as well as responses that may intentionally or unintentionally harm trauma survivors. Emphasis will be placed on contemporary issues, including the representation of trauma on social media, the commodification and amplification of trauma narratives in digital spaces, the rapid global expansion of trauma discourse, and structural responses that attempt to address or accommodate trauma survivorship.
