This upper-level interdisciplinary course examines trauma through the lenses of ethnic and gender studies, exploring how experiences of trauma are shaped by systems of power such as racism, colonialism, patriarchy, and state violence. Moving beyond strictly psychological definitions, the course investigates how trauma becomes recognized, narrated, and addressed within social institutions including medicine, law, education, and the media. Students will engage scholarship from ethnic studies, gender studies, Indigenous studies, and cultural theory while examining how trauma is represented in literature, film, and public discourse. Throughout the semester, we will consider how communities experience and respond to trauma, and how practices of collective care, resilience, and justice-oriented healing emerge in response to structural violence.
