This course focuses on the relationship between media genres and different forms of popular culture. Students explore different theoretical approaches to the understanding the role of media in modern society. The course examines how popular media communicate ideas about the world, about identity, and our sense of self. Reading across social media, gaming, television, film, music, art, and the popular press, the course considers relationships between the media, institutions, identity, relations of power, and historical, economic, social, and political contexts.
