Examines fiction and nonfiction texts in supporting literacy growth across middle level content areas, grades 5-9. Instructional strategies include curating diverse text sets, creating units and lessons, and balancing core classroom texts with student choice.
Examines quality literature that appeals to early adolescents in grades 5-9 and focuses on teaching methods that support literary understanding. Topics include aesthetic and efferent reading processes; developing curriculum for diverse, multicultural classrooms; using writing and the arts as tools for developing literary comprehension; assessment and evaluation of literature learning.
