This course is designed to provide the studentwith an overview of the legal and regulatoryrequirements for the maintenance, retention, anddissemination of health information and the roleof patient documentation in legal proceedings.Major topics include: federal and stateregulations; accreditation standards; the federaland state legal system; authorizations andconsents, release of information, concepts ofliability; civil procedures; compliance and therole of risk management. Students will berequired to complete assignments utilizing asimulated electronic medical record system duringand outside of class time.
