This course helps teacher educators understand how language is used and functions within and outside classroom walls. Topics include globalization, language and social settings, gender, identity, ethnicity, and culture. The course examines global language use, language variation, power, discourse, policy, digital literacies, and language socialization. Educators develop understanding of how sociopolitical, sociocultural, and sociolinguistic factors affect language learning and classroom practice.
