Earthquakes, tornados, wildfires, and floods; bad things happen to good people - sometimes because of bad actors. Bad Actors and Bad Things provides an overview of the kinds of natural hazards faced in the world along with the kinds of bad actors that may make hazards more dangerous. For each type of hazard and bad actor, we examine what it is, how the hazard/actor develops, how it is measured/monitored, what the effects are, and the preparedness, response, or mitigation activities done to protect people from them. This course will include discussion of Bad Things such as: Hurricanes, tornadoes, and other storms, Floods, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Landslides, Extreme heat/cold, Snow/ice, Space weather, Wildfire, Volcanic eruption, and Accidents and industrial disasters. The course will also include discussion of Bad Actors such as: Criminals, Terrorists, Foreign states, Thrill seekers, Activists and Protestors, Private companies, and Ordinary citizens. Bad actors are typically defined as criminals, terrorists, and foreign states seeking to do harm to the United States. However, we will also explore how ordinary citizens with good intentions can harm the U.S. and contribute to and worsen the impacts of disaster through their action and inaction.
