This course is a study of Earth’s climate system and associated sustainability concepts. Core topics include the current state of knowledge involving Earth’s climate in the present, the past, and future. The physics of energy, Earth systems science, the nature of air pollution, human energy consumption patterns, the role of energy in modern society, sustainability practices, and how these topics relate to modern food production will also be emphasized. The laboratory experience focuses on quantitative problem solving that encourages students to delve into the numbers concerning energy, its production, usage rates, and impacts on the environment, agriculture, and the climate system over time.
